It is one of the 217 municipalities in the State of Puebla, covering an area of 229.22 km² . Its economic strengths lie in tourism , commerce , and agriculture ; it is the largest producer of plants and flowers in the State of Puebla, earning it the nickname " Atlixco of the Flowers ." In September 2018, UNESCO designated Atlixco a Learning City , making it the third such city in Mexico.
